Oasis on the Playa article on Expedition Portal by Chris Van Loan. Check out more of my adventure photography and read about my trip to the Black Rock desert with Prometheus Design Werx, Exploro.co and Bay Area Expeditions. We brought two classic Toyota Landcruiser’s on the off-road trails and stunning landscapes of the Nevada Great Basin desert. We visited abandoned mining ghost towns, hot spring oases, and spotted many wild animals on the way.
Patricks FJ40 had been fully restored and upgraded with a diesel engine. Elias’s Toyota HJ47 Land Cruiser is one of four in the world that exists. It is an iteration of the FJ but a different animal with a large cab, diesel engine, four doors and was built for a visit to a mining company in Australia by Toyota executives. It is also in ‘better-than-new’ condition in many ways and has several upgrades including a Three Dog brand roof top tent with queen sized bed.
